April 20, 2018by Shauna ScottNo Comments
We are really excited that we will be hosting workshops and talks at the Affordable Art Fair – Hampstead, from 10-13 May 2018.

CSM Short Course tutors, David Price, Kim Scouller, Andrew Marsh, and Sarah Sparkes will be providing great workshops and talks each day of the fair.

In advance of the event, we spoke to our CSM Short Courses tutors and asked them, ‘What would you say to someone that thinks they are not creative?’

David Price

To be human is to be creative. People who don’t think that they are creative are mixing up creativity for skill and craft. Skill and craft are the tools of artists to enact on their creativity – but these are learned – not innate. Being creative is innate, and we simply need to find our own ways to enact on our own creativity.

Thursday 10 May, David Price will be running two workshops:

Pass the Paper! 1 – 2pm

Join CSM Short Courses tutor and artist David Price for a fast-paced drawing game for all. No need to book, just roll-up-ready and get stuck straight in. Quick drawing games designed to help you lose all your drawing inhibitions and have some fun.

Cut and Paste! 3 – 4pm

CSM Short Courses tutor and artist David Price will show you how to make your own Joseph Cornell inspired collage. Using prepared photocopies of animals, maps, and antique prints you will create your own unique artwork with ideas and skills borrowed from one of Surrealisms’ most popular and enduring creators. No experience necessary, just an eye for detail – this workshop is quiet, calming aimed at anyone who can use a pair of scissors.

Kim Scouller
Firstly, stop saying you’re “not creative” – by changing your mindset you can become more creative – so if you think you’re creative, then you’re more likely to actually be creative.

Turn the judgemental part of your brain off and do something you enjoy and that inspires you and don’t worry about the results. It’s really hard to be creative under pressure, so let go and do something that maybe feels silly, anything to break up your routine. By doing this you’re telling your brain it’s ok to try new things.

So take risks, try something new…anything, just have a go and see what you can do!

Friday 11 May, Kim Souller will be running two workshops:

Making your Mark – Drawing Workshop, 1 – 2pm

CSM Short Courses tutor and artist Kim Scouller, will help you discover new ways of making marks in this fun hands-on drawing workshop. Choose from a variety of objects to explore their form and texture using both your hands and eyes. Imagine looking at the objects under a magnifying glass and discover ways to re-create the visual textures using bold tactile marks.

Decadent Drawings Workshop, 3 – 4pm

Delve into drawing with a Baroque inspired workshop with CSM Short Courses tutor and artist Kim Scouller. You will be exploring the most decadent period of art through different approaches to drawing. Feast your eyes on our quirky and delicious still life, using traditional and non-traditional techniques to create drawings good enough to eat!

Andrew Marsh

I often hear people say that they’re not creative, but I think one needs to think about what a creative act can be. It doesn’t necessarily mean wielding a paintbrush. Many of us are creative in our jobs seeking creative solutions to problems we might encounter. Lot’s of people have hobbies that require a creative approach in some way or another. Gardening is hugely creative. When we visit museums and look at art we engage with creativity and our own taste as we do when we got to a gallery or an art fair and buy a work to live with. These are all creative acts. Just because you don’t wield a paintbrush doesn’t mean you’re not creative.

What courses did you study on and why did you choose them?

During Easter School I studied Life Drawing with Light and Shadow, because I love drawing the human figure; last year, Autumn Term, I studied Anatomical Drawing for Beginners to develop my drawing ability. Outside of CSM, I also studied Oil Painting Level 2, at Chelsea College of Arts, to learn more about the advanced techniques of oil painting

What did you enjoy most about your courses?

Upon Life Drawing with Light and Shadow I loved the tutor’s choice of models, they were wonderful, and how fantastic and inspiring the teacher was (the BP Portrait Award Prize 2018 shortlisted, Miriam Escofet). The class atmosphere made me feel like I could be happy to study forever at Central Saint Martins.

How has the course benefited your career and personal development?

Personally it has benefited me greatly, in many ways. I gained confidence and knowledge that will help me open doors to becoming a known, professional artist, in the future.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking a short course at Central Saint Martins?

Choose the course you would love to develop your skills and expand your abilities in. This will benefit you greatly whilst studying for a shorter period of time, and you will definitely meet inspiring people!

What do you believe is integral to the work of an artist, in any discipline?

I believe ability comes from within, but even talented people require the knowledge and practice to learn the basics and certain rules about art.

What three words best describe your short course experience at CSM?

Inspiring. Wonderful. Success.
